Sexism in music isn’t always loud or obvious — sometimes it hides between the lines. Sing certain lyrics out loud and you’ll quickly realize how deeply they echo the biases of our society.
To spark a real conversation about this, we brought together an incredible group of women and created MMPB — Música Machista Popular Brasileira (Brazilian Sexist Popular Music). It’s a project where people could listen, read, and understand why some iconic songs in Brazilian culture are deeply problematic. From rape apology to domestic violence, the initiative helped ignite a much-needed, healthy debate about sexism in our popular culture.
